How to Find Words in a Word Search Fast

To find words in a word search fast, don't read the grid letter by letter for every word. Pick the word's rarest letter (like Y, K, Z or J) or a distinctive pair such as a double letter, sweep the grid for it, then check the eight directions around each match. Do long words first and cross each word off as you go.

First, know which ways words can run

A hidden word is always a straight line of touching letters, but the line can point eight ways: across, down, two diagonals, and all four of those backwards. How many of them a puzzle uses decides how hard it is, so check before you start.

Technique 1: Start with the rarest letter

Scanning for the first letter is slow when it's a common one like E, A or S, because it shows up everywhere. Instead, look for the least common letter in the word. Letters like J, Q, X, Z, K, Y and W appear far less often, so there are only a few places to check.

Looking for LILY? There's only one Y in this grid, so LILY has to end there. It runs diagonally, backwards.

Once you've found the rare letter, look at its eight neighbours for the letter that comes next (or before) in the word, then follow that line. Two matching letters in a row tell you the direction; the rest is just checking.

Technique 2: Scan for letter pairs and double letters

If a word has no rare letter, hunt for a pair instead. Double letters jump out of a grid: the TT in OTTER, the PP in RIPPLE, the EE in REED. Unusual pairs work too, such as CK, WH or QU. Your eye picks out two letters together much faster than one letter among 144.

Watch out for decoys. The filler letters are random, so a pair can appear by chance (this grid has a stray PP in the bottom-right corner). Always check the whole word before you select it.

Technique 3: Sweep the grid in order

Random glancing makes you look at the same spots again and again. Sweep instead: run your eyes (or a finger) along each row from left to right, top to bottom, looking for just one target letter or pair. Then sweep the columns top to bottom to catch the down words. It feels slower, but you never miss a spot.

A faster version for experienced players: hold the whole word list in mind as you sweep, and stop whenever you see the rare letter of any word on the list.

Technique 4: Find the long words first

A long word has far fewer places it can fit, and it usually has at least one distinctive letter. Finding it early also helps later: the letters it uses are often shared with shorter words that cross it, and once the long words are circled, the grid feels less crowded. Leave three- and four-letter words for last.

Technique 5: Read backwards words in reverse

On Hard, words can run right to left and bottom to top. Your brain is trained to read left to right, so a backwards word is easy to skip. Two tricks help:

  • Spell the word backwards in your head (TURTLE becomes ELTRUT) and scan the rows for that.
  • Use the last letter as your starting point: if a word ends in an unusual letter, look for it and read backwards from there.

Technique 6: Cross off as you go

Mark every word you find, both in the grid and on the list, so you never search for it twice. On GameLake, found words are circled with a highlighter and crossed off the list automatically. The circles also show which letters are already used, which helps you spot the gaps where the last words hide.

Solved: RIPPLE, BEAVER, TURTLE, ISLAND, OTTER, HERON, REED, SWAN, FISH, LILY and DUCK. Six of them run backwards.

When you're stuck

  • Change technique. If the first letter isn't working, switch to the rarest letter or a pair.
  • Check the directions you've been ignoring, usually the backwards ones and the diagonals.
  • Look away for a moment. A fresh look often finds a word you've stared past.
  • Use a hint. GameLake gives you three per puzzle; each one points to the first letter of a word you haven't found.

Speed matters for stars. You earn three stars by finishing without hints inside the par time (1½ minutes on Easy, 3 on Medium, 5 on Hard), and two stars for finishing within twice the par time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to solve a word search?

Look for each word's rarest letter or a double letter instead of its first letter, check the eight directions around each match, and find the long words first.

Which directions can words go in a word search?

Across, down and diagonally, and in harder puzzles also backwards in any of those directions: eight in all. On GameLake, Easy uses across and down, Medium adds two diagonals, and Hard uses all eight.

Should I look for the first letter of a word?

Only if it's an uncommon letter. Common letters like E, A or S appear all over the grid, so a rare letter or a letter pair is quicker to find.

Can words overlap in a word search?

Yes. Two words can share a letter where they cross, so a letter that's already circled can still belong to another word.

How do hints work in GameLake's word search?

You get three hints per puzzle. Each one rings the first letter of a word you haven't found yet. Finishing without hints is needed for three stars.
