5-Letter Word Game Strategy: Solve in 3 Guesses
To solve a 5-letter word game in 3 guesses, use your second guess to split the words that are left, not just to fit the clues. When several answers differ by one letter, like SHAPE, SHAME, SHADE and SHAVE, spend a guess on a word that tests those letters together. And read doubles carefully: a letter that lights up once and shows dark once is in the word exactly once. Tested on all 867 answers in GameLake's Word Guess, this approach solves about 80% of games in 3 guesses and never needs more than 4.
Why guesses 2 to 4 decide the game
A strong first word, such as RAISE or STARE, leaves about 20 possible answers on average (our best starting words guide has the full test). Everything after that is about cutting 20 words down to one as fast as you can. These ideas work for Wordle and every other game with the same colour clues; the numbers come from GameLake's English Word Guess list.
To see how much the middle guesses matter, we had a simple computer solver play every one of the 867 answers, always opening with RAISE, under three different rules for what it may guess next:
| After RAISE, the solver may guess… | Solved in 3 or fewer | Worst game |
|---|---|---|
| Any allowed word (5,052 of them) | 80% | 4 guesses |
| Any word allowed in Hard mode | 72% | 6 guesses |
| Only words that could be the answer | 70% | 7 guesses (a loss) |
The difference is all in the hard cases. When the solver is free to guess a word that can't be the answer, it can test several letters at once and never gets stuck. When it may only guess possible answers, it sometimes has to try them one by one.
Fit or split? Choosing guess 2
After your first guess, count roughly how many words still fit. Then choose:
- One or two words fit: guess one of them. You might win now, and you'll certainly know the answer next turn.
- A handful fit and they differ in several places: a word that fits the clues usually splits them well too. Guess one.
- Lots fit, or they differ in just one spot: guess a word that tests the letters they don't share, even if it can't be the answer.
A good splitting word reuses as few known letters as possible and packs in the letters that would tell the candidates apart. It can also do two jobs at once, as in this game:
Watch out for word families
The classic way to lose is finding four letters on guess 2 or 3 and then running out of guesses on the fifth. It happens with word families: answers that share four letters in the same places. These are the biggest in GameLake's answer list:
| Pattern | Answers | How many |
|---|---|---|
| _IGHT | RIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, LIGHT, FIGHT, EIGHT, TIGHT, SIGHT | 8 |
| _ATCH | WATCH, MATCH, CATCH, PATCH, BATCH, HATCH | 6 |
| SHA_E | SHARE, SHAPE, SHAME, SHAKE, SHADE, SHAVE | 6 |
| _OUND | FOUND, SOUND, ROUND, BOUND, POUND | 5 |
| S_EEP | SLEEP, SHEEP, STEEP, SWEEP | 4 |
| ST_CK | STOCK, STICK, STUCK, STACK | 4 |
| _OUGH | TOUGH, ROUGH, COUGH, DOUGH | 4 |
The rule: if more words fit than you have guesses left, stop guessing them one at a time. Find a word that contains as many of the missing letters as possible. FERNS or FLAME splits the _IGHT family in one go, and BLIMP sorts out BATCH, MATCH and PATCH.
Reading double letters
Almost 3 in 10 answers repeat a letter, and doubles cause more confusion than anything else. Two rules cover every case, because each copy of a letter is coloured separately:
- Every copy lights up (orange or teal): the word has at least that many. In the SPELL game above, both Ls lit up, so there are at least two.
- One copy lights up and another stays dark: the word has exactly that many. One E was teal and one dark, so SPELL has exactly one E.
Which letters double most? In GameLake's answers, E is doubled in 69 words, then L (30), R (25), O (23) and A (21). In 117 answers the two copies sit side by side, like the LL in SPELL or the EE in SHEEP, and four answers use a letter three times: ERROR, DADDY, PUPPY and MOMMY.
Suspect a double when your clues stop making sense: you've placed three or four letters, the rest of the alphabet is mostly dark, and no word seems to fit. Try doubling a letter you already have, especially E, L, O or S.
Hard mode: plan one guess further
In GameLake's Hard mode, every orange letter has to stay in its spot and every teal letter has to be used again. Dark letters aren't banned, but using them wastes space. That takes away the splitting guess as soon as you've found a few letters, which is why the solver's worst game in Hard mode is 6 guesses (for SHAVE and WATCH) instead of 4.
- Pack guess 2 with fresh letters. You must reuse what guess 1 found, but fill every other spot with new, common letters. Each later guess has fewer free spots.
- Use the spare spots. If only three spots are fixed, fill the other two with letters that tell the remaining words apart, not with letters you've already ruled out.
- Move teal letters. Hard mode only checks that a teal letter is used. Put it in a new spot each time, or you learn nothing new about it.
- Head off families early. Once _ATCH or SHA_E is locked in, Hard mode leaves you guessing the words one by one. Common family letters like M, P, D, T and S in your first two guesses make that less likely.
A 3-guess game plan
- Open with a strong word with five common letters, such as RAISE, ARISE or STARE.
- Count what's left. If a lot of words fit, guess five new letters or a splitting word. If a few fit, guess one that fits.
- Before guess 3, look for a family. If more words fit than guesses remain, play a word that tests their differences.
- Check doubles: one lit copy plus one dark copy means exactly one.
- On Easy, lean toward everyday words: the answer always comes from the most common third of the list. On Medium, Hard and the Daily, any of the 867 answers can come up.
Check your thinking with Teach me
In Word Guess, press Teach me on Easy or Medium and Hop sums up what you know, then suggests a word that fits every clue while testing the most useful new letters (or tells you when only one word fits). It always suggests a possible answer, so it's the "fit" choice. If you can think of several other words that fit and differ in one spot, that's your cue to consider a splitting word instead. Easy also lets you reveal one letter. The Daily word is the same for everyone and changes at midnight, your local time.
Frequently asked questions
How do you solve a 5-letter word puzzle in 3 guesses?
Open with five common letters, then use guess 2 to split the words that are left. If several answers share four letters, guess a word that tests the fifth letters together instead of trying them one by one.
Should my second guess use new letters or fit the clues?
If many words still fit, five new letters or a splitting word usually tells you more. If only a few fit and they differ in several places, guess one that fits.
What does it mean when one copy of a letter is coloured and the other is dark?
The word contains exactly as many copies as lit up. If one E is teal and another is dark, the word has exactly one E.
What are the hardest 5-letter words to guess?
Members of big word families, such as the _IGHT words (RIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, LIGHT, FIGHT, EIGHT, TIGHT, SIGHT) and the _ATCH words, because finding four letters still leaves many options.
Is Hard mode harder?
Yes. You must keep orange letters in place and reuse teal letters, so you can't spend a guess testing new letters once you've found some. Our test solver never needed more than 4 guesses normally, but needed up to 6 in Hard mode.
How many answers have double letters?
In GameLake's English list, 258 of the 867 answers (about 3 in 10) repeat a letter. E is the most common double.
