Pinochle Bidding Strategy: How Much to Bid

A good Pinochle bid is your meld + about 20–40 from your partner + the counters you expect (about 100–130 with an average hand, more with long trumps and aces). Bid to win the contract only when you hold a trump suit of 5 or more cards; with short suits, pass and let your meld score for free. Going set costs the whole bid, so bid what you'll make, not what you hope for.

Count before you bid

  1. Pick the suit you'd name as trumps: the longest, ideally with A and 10.
  2. Add up your meld with that suit as trumps.
  3. Add 20–40 for your partner's meld.
  4. Add the counters you expect: 100–130 normally, up to 150+ with 6 trumps and two aces.

Trump length matters most

Trumps in handWhat it meansBid?
4 or fewerYou'll be out-trumpedPass unless meld is huge
5Playable contractBid if meld is decent
6+You control the handBid confidently

Aces win tricks and score counters. Two aces in your trump suit are worth more than an extra marriage.

Reading your partner

Your partner's first bid says something. A jump (e.g. 250 straight to 300) usually means strong meld or a long suit; a minimum bid can be just a signal to keep the auction open. If your partner is bidding strongly and you hold support (aces, a marriage in their suit), keep the bidding alive.

Avoid going set

  • Remember the cost: going set at 350 swings the score by 350 plus whatever you'd have made by passing.
  • When it's close, pass: your meld still counts if your team takes a trick.
  • Late in the game, bid more boldly only if a set can't lose you the match.

Try it in Pinochle: on Easy and Medium, Teach me suggests a bid and shows the meld it's counting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good opening bid in Pinochle?

With average meld and five trumps, open at the minimum (250) and let the auction tell you more.

How many counters should I expect?

About 100–130 with an average hand; more with long trumps and several aces.

Should I bid with a long suit but little meld?

Often yes: 6 or more trumps with aces can win most of the 250 counters on their own.

What happens if I win the bid and fail?

Your team goes set and loses the bid amount from its score.
