A simple anniversary evening plan

You don't need a big night out. Ninety minutes, a good meal and four packs of cards make a lovely anniversary:

Short on time? Play 10 cards from Mix. One pack is plenty for a lovely hour.

Write a letter to your future selves

A habit worth keeping: write one short letter together to open in a year, or in ten. It takes about ten minutes and gets better every time you reread it.

  1. Choose the day you'll open it, such as your next anniversary.
  2. Each write a few lines on how things feel right now: what you love about this year and what you're proud of.
  3. Add three hopes for the time ahead and one small thing you'll do together on opening day.
  4. Seal it, or save it in a note with a reminder, and put the date in both calendars.

Not sure how to begin? Start from this card: "If we wrote a letter to ourselves to open in ten years, what's the first line you'd put in it?"

How to get more from anniversary questions

  • Go first. "What do you remember?" is easier to answer once you've told your own version.
  • There are no right answers. If you remember the day differently, enjoy the difference.
  • Bring props: old photos, tickets, messages. They bring back details you'd both forgotten.
  • Skip any card that doesn't fit tonight. The point is connection, not finishing the list.
  • Stay on the question you can't stop talking about.

Play it free online

  1. Open Our Story: Memory Lane, then choose a pack (or Mix) and 10 or 20 cards.
  2. On one phone, choose Same phone, press Start and take turns reading. To celebrate apart, choose Online, tap Play a friend and Create table, and send your partner the invite link.
  3. Your partner opens the link on their own phone or computer. There is nothing to download and no account, and you both see the same card at the same time.
  4. Read each card out loud, tell your side of the story, then tap Next card.
  5. Finish with the Looking ahead pack and write your letter.

It is free, works on phones and computers, and suits long-distance couples celebrating across time zones. For more ideas, see our guide to card games for couples and all the games for couples.

Frequently asked questions

What are good anniversary questions for couples?

Good anniversary questions mix memory and hope: "What do you remember about the first time we met?", "Which photo of us is your favourite?" and "What do you hope we're still laughing about in ten years?" The four packs in Our Story: Memory Lane hold 80 of them.

What are good questions about our relationship?

Start with the story (how it began and your favourite moments), then move to what you've learned and what you want next. Open questions that begin with "what" or "when" invite stories rather than yes or no answers.

What Valentine's Day questions for couples work best?

Light, warm ones: favourite trips, the sweetest thing your partner has said, and a perfect evening that cost almost nothing. Finish with a Looking ahead card so the night ends on something to plan.

How do you play anniversary questions as a game?

Take turns reading a card aloud, tell your side of the story, then swap. In GameLake you pick a pack and 10 or 20 cards, and each card appears one at a time.

Can we play online or long distance?

Yes. Choose Online, create a table and send your partner the link. You each use your own phone and see the same card at the same time.

Is it free?

Yes. Our Story: Memory Lane is free to play in the browser, with no download and no account.
