The best first date questions start light and get warmer as you relax: weekends and food first, then playful what-ifs, then what matters to you, and something sweet to finish. 60 questions to ask on a first date, pack by pack
These are "getting to know you" questions you can use on a first date, a coffee with a new friend or any early conversation. Start at the top and move down, and skip anything that does not feel right. Every question comes straight from the four packs in the game.

What to avoid asking on a first date
Curiosity is great. Pressure is not. A few topics land better later, once there is some trust:
- Exes and past relationships. A short "how long have you been single?" is fine; a full history is not.
- Money. Salary, debt and what things cost can wait.
- Where is this going? Timelines for marriage, kids or moving in are too big for a first coffee. (The one kids card in the game is marked "only if you like" for this reason.)
- Appearance, weight or age. Ask about what people enjoy, not how they look.
- Heavy family or health stories. Let your date share them if and when they want to.
- Rapid-fire interviews. If you ask five questions in a row without answering any, it feels like a job interview. Share your own answer too.
A good test: would you be comfortable answering the question yourself, out loud, to a stranger? If yes, ask away.
A simple plan for the first 30 minutes
You do not need a script, but a rough shape helps when nerves kick in. Move through the packs in this order:
Treat it as a loose guide. If the conversation is already flowing, keep following it.
| When | What to do | Pack |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes 0-10 | Order a drink, settle in and ask three or four light questions. | Easy icebreakers |
| Minutes 10-20 | Get playful. Trade silly answers and laugh together. | Fun and what-ifs |
| Minutes 20-30 | Ask one or two bigger questions and follow up with "why?". | What matters |
| The last few minutes | Say what you enjoyed and suggest a next time. | Getting closer |
How to get the most out of these questions
- Answer first, then ask. Going first with an honest answer makes it easy for the other person to relax.
- Ask "why?" or "what is the story behind that?" before moving to the next card. The follow-up is where it gets interesting.
- Pick a few, not all. Five or six questions with good follow-ups beat twenty rushed ones.
- Skipping is always fine. Say "pass" with a smile and grab another.
- Listen for what excites them and ask about that. It tells you more than any list.
Different answers are not a problem. You are not looking for a perfect match, just for what makes the other person light up.
Play it free (on one phone or online)
| Way to play | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| One phone, over coffee | Pass the phone back and forth and read each card aloud. | Cafés, walks, meeting in person |
| Online | Each of you opens the same table on your own device and sees the same card. | Long distance, a video-call first date |
| Just this list | Pick a few questions from above and keep them in mind. | When you would rather keep the phone away |
- Open First Date Questions and choose a pack (or Mix) and 10 or 20 cards, then press Start.
- On one phone, pass it back and forth. To play apart, choose Online, tap Play a friend and Create table, and send your date the invite link. They open it on their phone or computer, with no account.
- Take turns reading the card aloud. You both answer, as much or as little as you like, then ask one follow-up.
- Skip any card you do not fancy. Nothing is scored and there is no right answer.
- When the cards run out, start another pack, or finish with Getting closer to end on something sweet.

Frequently asked questions
What are good first date questions?
Start with easy topics like work, weekends, food and favourite places, then move to playful what-ifs and a few questions about what matters to you. The 60 questions above follow exactly that order.
What are good getting-to-know-you questions?
The best ones are open and easy to answer, such as "What does a perfect lazy Sunday look like for you?" or "What's a small thing that always makes your day better?". They work for dates, new friends and teammates alike.
How many questions should I ask on a first date?
There is no number. A handful of questions with real follow-ups is plenty, and the rest of the time can be ordinary conversation. Aim for a back-and-forth, not an interview.
What should you not ask on a first date?
Most people prefer to save exes, money, marriage and kids timelines, and heavy family or health topics for later. Never comment on looks, and share your own answers instead of firing off questions.
Can we play First Date Questions online or on a video call?
Yes. Choose Online, create a table and send your date the link. You both see the same card at the same time, so it works well for a long-distance or video-call first date.
Is First Date Questions free?
Yes. It is free to play, with no download and no account, on a phone or a computer. You can use one phone together or play online with a link.
