85 questions to ask your crush, by stage

Start at the top and move down only when the chat feels easy and you are both enjoying it. Ask one question, listen properly and answer it yourself too, so it feels like a conversation and not an interview. Nobody has to answer anything: "I'll pass" is always a fine reply. These are the same cards you will find in the games.

Over text or in person?

Over text

  • Send one question at a time and let them answer in their own time. A reply that takes a few hours is perfectly normal.
  • Stick to openers and this-or-that questions: they are quick to answer on a phone and fun to reply to.
  • Answer your own question too, so it feels like a chat and not a quiz.
  • Tone is hard to read in text, so add a smiley or a joke to keep flirty questions light.
  • If they send short replies or go quiet, ease off. Two or three unanswered questions in a row is too many.

In person

  • Work questions into whatever you are doing: a walk, a coffee, a queue, a lift home.
  • Listen and follow up with "why?" or "tell me more" instead of rushing to the next question.
  • Watch how they respond. If they lean in and add details, you can go a little deeper; if answers get short, change the subject.
  • Share something about yourself after each of their answers, so it stays two-way.
  • Ask a few, not twenty. End while it is still fun.

Consent works both ways. If a question gets a joke or a very short answer instead of a real one, take the hint kindly and move on.

What not to ask yet

Early on, keep these for later or for when they bring them up themselves:

  • Details about their exes or past relationships.
  • How they feel about you. If you want to know, invite them for a coffee and say it face to face, kindly and with no pressure.
  • Heavy topics such as money, health, family troubles or religion and politics, unless they raise them.
  • Marriage, kids or where this is going.
  • Anything about their body or their private life, beyond a kind compliment.
  • Where exactly they live or what their daily routine is. Let them share that when they are comfortable.
  • Anything that puts them on the spot, like "Why haven't you replied?".

Which stage for which moment

Move down a stage only when it feels natural. There is no rush.

Frequently asked questions

What are good questions to ask your crush?

Good ones are light, open and easy to answer, like "What's the best thing you've eaten this week?" or "Which hobby could you talk about for hours?". Start there, then move to this-or-that questions, and only go deeper or flirtier when they clearly enjoy it.

What are fun questions to ask your crush over text?

Would-you-rather and this-or-that questions work best, because they are quick to answer and easy to joke about. Send one at a time and answer it yourself too.

How do you ask your crush questions without being awkward?

Ask one at a time, listen to the answer, and share your own. Turning it into a game ("Want to try a quick question game?") takes the pressure off, and it is fine to pass on any question.

How do you flirt with your crush using questions?

Keep it light and playful, like asking for their best cheesy line or what the most charming thing is that someone could do on a date. Watch how they respond: if they flirt back, carry on, and if not, move to a lighter topic.

What should you not ask your crush?

Skip things that put them on the spot or are private: details about exes, how they feel about you, heavy topics, where they live exactly, or anything about their body. Keep those for later or let them bring them up.

Can we play a question game online, and is it free?

Yes. First Date Questions has the openers, deeper cards and more, and you can play on one phone or online by sending an invite link. It is free, with no download and no account.
