Space Rocks

Arcade · Fly Hop's lily-pad ship and blast the space rocks.

Space Rocks is a free asteroid shooter game: fly Hop's little lily-pad spaceship through a starry night sky over the lake and break up the space rocks before they bump into you. Big rocks split into medium ones, medium into small, and saucers swoop in to shoot back. Play on your phone or computer, take on the Daily wave, or race a friend online.

How to play

  1. Turn with the left and right arrows (or A and D), fly with the up arrow (or W) and fire with Space. On a phone, pick Aim (touch the sky where you want to shoot and Hop turns and fires by himself) or Pad (turn and fly buttons on the left, Fire on the right).
  2. Your ship keeps drifting after you let go of Fly, just like in space. Turn around and fly the other way to slow down.
  3. Everything wraps around: fly off one edge and you come back on the other side. Rocks and shots do the same.
  4. Big rocks are worth 20 points and split in two, medium rocks 50, small rocks 100. A big saucer is worth 200 and a small one 1,000.
  5. Clear every rock to finish the wave; the next one has more, faster rocks. You get an extra ship every 10,000 points (every 5,000 on Easy). When your last ship is hit, the game is over.

Tips to win

  • Stay near the middle and let the rocks come to you: most ships are lost by flying fast into a crowd.
  • Break big rocks one at a time. Smashing everything at once fills the sky with fast little pieces.
  • Shoot saucers as soon as they appear. They fire back, and the small one aims at you.
  • Your shots wrap around the edges too, so you can hit a rock on the far side of the sky.
  • Stuck? Turn on Teach me: Hop rings the rock to watch and draws a dotted line to where your shot should go. Coached games are practice and don't set a best score.
  • To race someone online, open the Race tab. You both get the same rocks for 3 minutes, and the best score wins.

How do you play the asteroid game on a phone?

Pick Aim or Pad under the sky. With Aim, touch where you want to shoot and the ship turns and fires on its own; hold Fly to move. With Pad you get turn and fly buttons on the left and a Fire button on the right.

Is Space Rocks free?

Yes. It's free in your browser on phone, tablet or computer, with no download and no account.

Is this the original arcade game?

No. Space Rocks is GameLake's own game in the style of the 1979 arcade classic Asteroids, with the same kind of rules: momentum, screen wrap, rocks that split, saucers and extra ships. Switch on Classic look for white vector lines on a black screen.

How many points is each rock worth?

Big rocks 20, medium rocks 50 and small rocks 100. Saucers are worth 200 (big) or 1,000 (small).

What's different on Easy, Medium and Hard?

Easy has 5 ships, slower rocks, gentle saucers and a smaller hit area. Medium plays like the arcade. Hard starts with more, faster rocks and sharp-shooting small saucers from wave 2.

What is the Daily wave?

Every day everyone gets the same Medium game, with the same rocks in every wave. Play it to keep your daily streak going and compare scores.
