How to play

  1. Drag your lily pad on your half of the table (the bottom half on a phone, the left half on a computer). With a mouse, just move it; you can also steer with W A S D or the arrow keys.
  2. Hit the pearl into Hop's goal, the gap in the far end of the table. You can't cross the centre line, so wait for the pearl to come to your side.
  3. Swing through the pearl instead of just touching it: the speed of your lily pad goes into the pearl, so a fast swing makes a fast shot.
  4. Guard your own goal between shots. Stand on the line between the pearl and the middle of your goal, a little way out in front.
  5. Every goal is a point, and the player who was scored on serves next. The first to 7 goals wins the match.

Tips to win

  • Bank shots beat a goalie in the middle: aim at a side rail and the pearl bounces in at an angle that's hard to block.
  • Don't chase the pearl into Hop's half of the table. Hit it, then slide straight back in front of your goal.
  • Never push the pearl from in front of it towards your own goal. If it's behind your lily pad, go around it first.
  • A slow pearl on your side is a free shot: line up behind it, aim for the side of the goal Hop isn't covering, then swing.
  • On Easy, Hop can't read bank shots. On Hard, he can, so mix straight shots and banks to keep him guessing.
  • Learning? Press Teach me: Hop marks where to stand or the shot to take, with a dotted line for the pearl and one line saying why. The pearl moves a bit slower, and coached matches are practice, so they don't count for your record.
  • Switch on the Classic look for a white arcade table with air holes, red and blue mallets and an LED scoreboard.

What are the basic rules of air hockey?

Stay on your own half, score by getting the puck fully into the other goal, and the player who was scored on serves next. In this game a match goes to 7 goals, which is also the usual game length on real tables.

How do you win at air hockey?

Defend first: keep your mallet between the puck and the middle of your goal. Then attack with bank shots off the side rails and quick straight shots to the side of the goal your opponent isn't covering.

Can two people play Air Hockey on one device?

Yes. Choose 2 players. On a phone, one player holds the bottom half and the other the top half. On a computer, player 1 uses the mouse or W A S D and player 2 uses the arrow keys.
