Play Hangman free online: guess the hidden word one letter at a time before the chalk figure is finished. Every word comes with a category as your hint, like Fruit or Birds. Easy gives you 8 misses, Medium 7 and Hard 6, with a new Daily word every day, 2 players on one device and online races against a friend.

How to play

  1. A hidden word waits under the chalkboard, one slot per letter. The category above it tells you what kind of word it is.
  2. Tap a letter on the keyboard or type it. If it's in the word, it appears in every slot where it belongs.
  3. If it isn't, a chalk stroke is added: the post, the plank, then the little figure's head, body, arms and legs.
  4. Find the whole word before your misses run out. On the last miss the figure tips off the plank into the lake, splash!
  5. Fewer misses earn more stars. The Daily word is the same for everyone that day; 2 players lets one person type a secret word for the other to guess.

Tips to win

  • Start with the vowels: E and A are in most words, and they show the shape of the word quickly.
  • Then try the common consonants, like T, N, S, R and L, before the rare ones like Q, X and Z.
  • Use the category: once a few letters are showing, think of words from that group that fit the gaps.
  • Stuck? Tap Teach me and Hops suggests the letter found in the most words that still fit.

How do you play Hangman?

One player thinks of a word and shows a blank for each letter; the other guesses letters. A right letter fills in its blanks, a wrong one adds a stroke to the drawing. Guess the word before the drawing is finished to win.

What is the best first letter in Hangman?

E is the most common letter in English words, followed by A, R, I and O. Starting with vowels shows the shape of the word fastest.

How many misses do you get?

Here you get 8 misses on Easy, 7 on Medium and in the Daily, and 6 on Hard. Harder levels start with the post already drawn.

Can I play Hangman with a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 players to take turns typing a secret word on one device, or Race to play online: you both get the same word, and the first to find it wins.
