Yatzy game cover

Yatzy

Board · Five dice, three rolls, thirteen boxes: fill your sheet and outscore Hops.

Play Yatzy free online, the classic five-dice game: roll up to three times a turn, keep the dice you like and fill the 13 boxes of your score sheet, from Ones to Yatzy, five of a kind for 50 points. Beat Hops the frog at Easy, Medium or Hard, pass the phone for 2 to 4 players, play friends online, or try the Daily, where everyone gets the same dice.

How to play

  1. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard to play against 1 to 3 bots, or Friends to pass one device around 2 to 4 players. Pick the number of players, the score sheet (Classic or Scandinavian) and press Start.
  2. Press Roll to throw five dice. Tap any dice you want to keep (they lift and say Keep), then roll the others. You can roll up to three times a turn; the dots on the Roll button show how many rolls are left.
  3. After any roll, the open boxes on your sheet show what the dice would score there. Tap a box to score it. Every box is used exactly once, so sometimes you have to put a 0 in a box: tap it twice to cross it out.
  4. Top section: Ones to Sixes score the dice of that number. Reach 63 or more there (three of each) and you get a 35-point bonus. Bottom section: Three and Four of a kind (all five dice added up), Full house 25, Small straight (four in a row) 30, Large straight (five in a row) 40, Yatzy 50 and Chance (any roll, all dice added up).
  5. Every extra Yatzy after a 50 is worth +100 and works as a joker. When all 13 boxes are full, the highest total wins. The tabs at the top show everyone's total; tap one to see that player's sheet.

Tips to win

  • Aim for three of each number in the top section: that adds up to exactly 63 and earns the bonus. A four of a kind of 5s or 6s up top makes up for a weak box elsewhere.
  • Don't chase straights from a pair: keep 3-4-5 or 2-3-4-5 runs, but with a pair and three odd dice, the pair is usually the better keep.
  • Use Chance as a safety net for a big roll that fits nowhere else, not early in the game for a small total.
  • When a turn goes badly, cross out a box that's worth little to you, like Ones or, late in the game, Yatzy, rather than a box that scores well on average.
  • Large straight is worth 40 and Full house 25 no matter which numbers: score them as soon as you roll them.
  • Switch on Teach me and Hops tells you which dice to keep or which box to score, with a reason in one line. Hard Hops plays by expected value and is a tough opponent.
  • Prefer the Scandinavian rules? Choose that score sheet before Start: it adds One pair and Two pairs, only the matching dice count, straights are 1-2-3-4-5 (15) and 2-3-4-5-6 (20), and the bonus is 50.

Questions

How do you play Yatzy?

On your turn roll five dice up to three times, keeping any dice between rolls, then score the result in one of 13 boxes on your sheet. Each box is used once, so after 13 turns the sheet is full and the highest total wins.

How does Yatzy scoring work?

Ones to Sixes score the dice of that number, with a 35 bonus for 63 or more. Three and Four of a kind score all five dice, Full house 25, Small straight 30, Large straight 40, Yatzy (five of a kind) 50 and Chance all five dice.

What is the Yatzy bonus?

If your Ones to Sixes add up to 63 or more, you get 35 extra points (50 in Scandinavian Yatzy). 63 is three of each number, so scoring at least three of a kind in every top box gets you there.

What happens if you roll a second Yatzy?

If your Yatzy box already holds 50, every extra Yatzy is worth +100. It's also a joker: it must go in its own top box if that's empty; otherwise it can go in any bottom box, where Full house and the straights score full value.

Is Yatzy the same as Yahtzee?

They're the same five-dice game with different names. Yatzy is the common public name; the classic sheet here uses the familiar 13 boxes, and the Scandinavian sheet plays the Nordic rules with pairs and fixed straights.

What are the odds of rolling a Yatzy?

With three rolls and keeping the most common number, about 4.6% of turns end in five of a kind. On a single roll of five dice it's only 6 in 7,776, about 0.08%.

What is the highest possible score?

Without extra Yatzys, 375 on the classic sheet and 374 on the Scandinavian sheet. With the +100 for every extra Yatzy, the classic score can go much higher.

How smart is Hops?

Easy keeps the number it has most of and takes the box worth the most points. Medium looks one roll ahead. Hard works out the expected value of every way to keep dice over the rolls left, including the top bonus, and averages around 250.

Can I play Yatzy online with friends?

Yes. Choose Online, then Play a friend, pick 2 to 4 players and send the link. The table rolls the dice for everyone, so nobody can cheat, and Hops fills empty seats. Quick match finds you an opponent instead.
