Chinese Checkers Strategy: 7 Tips to Win
The winning idea in Chinese Checkers is the ladder: marbles placed one hole apart in a line let you chain long jumps across the board in a single turn. Move your marbles as a group so they keep making ladders for each other, don't leave a straggler at the back, use rivals' marbles as stepping stones, and fill your target triangle from the far tip so the last marbles still have room.
1. Build ladders
A ladder is a line of marbles with one empty hole between each. A marble at one end can jump over every rung in turn, gaining two rows per jump. A four-rung ladder moves a marble eight rows in one turn; a step moves it one.
2. Move as a group
Marbles that travel together keep making ladders for each other. A good rhythm is to jump your back marble forward over the others, then use it as a rung for the next one. A lone marble far ahead has nobody to jump over.
3. Don't leave a straggler
The most common way to lose a close game: nine marbles home and one stuck far behind, crawling forward one step a turn with nothing to jump over. Bring your last marbles along early, while the others can still help them.
4. Use other players' marbles
Any colour can be jumped. Rivals heading the opposite way often leave perfect rungs in the middle of the board. Before every move, look for chains that use their marbles too.
5. Don't build ladders for your opponent
Your rungs work for everyone. In a two-player game, a ladder you leave pointing the wrong way can send your rival racing down the board. If a move helps you a little and them a lot, pick another.
6. Get out of your starting triangle
Under the modern rule, a target counts as filled when every hole is taken and at least one marble is the owner's. So marbles you leave at home can help a rival finish in your triangle. Clear your start early.
7. Fill the target from the tip
Send your first marbles to the far tip of the target triangle. If you fill the front row first, the marbles behind have to squeeze past and the last few moves become slow single steps.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best strategy in Chinese Checkers?
Build ladders (marbles one hole apart in a line) for long jump chains, move as a group, and don't leave any marble far behind.
How do you move faster in Chinese Checkers?
With jump chains. Each jump gains two rows, and a chain can include many jumps in one turn.
Should you block other players in Chinese Checkers?
Rarely. Under the modern rule, marbles left in a rival's target can't stop them winning, and jumped marbles are never captured.
How do you fill the target triangle quickly?
Put your first marbles in the far tip, so the later ones can jump straight into the remaining holes.
